On September 2, 2015, we held our second class meeting at the Spartan Superway Design Center. It was a great opportunity for me to see some of the work done by the previous teams. Upon arrival, we were introduced to a couple more people who will be helping and mentoring us as we move along with the project. Individuals went up to the podium to present their 1-minute presentation assignment that was due on that day. It was a great way to brush up on some of our public speaking skills and see what improvements are needed to be made. A tour of the center was provided shortly after the presentations.
After seeing roughly five station of the work done in this project. We had the opportunity to decide how we can form teams to work on the five fields presented to us. At the beginning, I was interested in the scale model because the presentation sparked my interest and I wanted to work on automation for the small scale model. I decided to join the Solar Team because Dr. Furman stated that we needed most of the work done on this field and I wanted to challenge myself while learning more about solar energy in general.
After forming the respective teams, the solar team had the opportunity to speak Ron and Dr. Furman about what was done by the previous team and what needs to be achieved this year. We had a great conversation on how the solar panel should be placed, how we should step away from the solar tracking system due to many problems that will be faced if we were to continue using the solar tracking system, and how it would be a great safety feature if we can include a "back-up" battery for the design. There are still many things we need to discuss and finalized, but it is a great start in terms of where we currently stand. Personally, I will continue to research on possible ideas and implementation that can be done for the solar field.
